Klagenfurt / AUSTRIA – a city surrounded by hills

Have you ever been thinking about Klagenfurt? Small city in Austria. When I said small I really mean it, but it’s cute.

My recommendation is to take a walk around the city and enjoy in a true spirit.

Where is it?

Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia in Austria. The city is the bishop’s seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt and home to the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt.

From all sides is surrounded by hills. The river Glan runs through the city, and not far from the city lies the river Drava on which there are several artificial lakes. In the immediate vicinity of the town there are many lakes: Ossiacher See, Faaker See, Silbersee, Vassacher See, Magdalensee and St. Leonharder see.

You can see the cathedral of St. Trinity – Alter Platz – Old and New Town Hall – Landhaus – Sv. Egid – Neuer platz with fountain dragon.

Bikers choose from a great number of well-maintained bike paths. Once a year in June Klagenfurt becomes the center of German literature: the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize, the most prestigious Austrian literary distinction, is awarded.

Traveling with kids? Or you’re feeling like a child and you what to explore something more? Minimundus is a perfect choice for it.

At Minimundus, the Miniature World at Lake Wörthersee, you can tour the world’s major sights and attractions in one afternoon.

Minimundus is the world in the small! It’s located in the park at Wörthersee, which is the exhibition of the most beautiful and famous buildings in the world at 1:25. Walking through Minimundus will take you to the feeling that you have grown 25 times, so from the bird’s perspective you are watching the world.

At this specific exhibition, 170 miniature buildings from 50 countries were set up and built by professional model builders. This entire story sounds pretty interesting, do you agree?!

I’m bringing you some interesting things that will surely encourage you to visit Minimundus, have fun and fights a couple of super photos, and at the same time do a good job as the revenue from purchased tickets goes to the Rettet das Kind, which is also the owner of the park.

#1. Minimundus is located in Klagenfurt, a town which, according to the legend, was born at the place where a kite was killed in the nearby swamp. The peasants knew to see the bubbles on the surface of the water attributed to the dragon under the water, and actually the consequences of the wet gas.

#2. Some of the exhibited models are the Statue of Liberty, Basilica of Sts. Petra, Toronto CN Tower, Hochosterwitz Castle in Austria, Sydney Opera House, London Tower, White House etc.

#3. The largest miniature building is the model of the Basilica of Sts. Peter in Rome, and the highest CN tower from Toronto. Particularly interesting are the Sagrada Familia cathedral from Barcelona and Space Shuttle, which every hour demonstrates a start with smoke and fire and is raised three meters above the ground.

#4. In addition to each building, an inscription with a brief explanation of what the building is depicted is placed, so this is a perfect opportunity to learn something new.

Inside the park you have a bar where you can sit and take a lunch or a coffee break.

More about the entry fees and opening hours – here.

My recommendation is to plan your visit during spring or summer time – the best time to take a calm walk through the whole park.

Through the whole park there is a river, the best is to sit and enjoy watching boats floating around, train driving through the park or the rocket.

Perfect destination for one day – to get lost from your daily routine.

If you decide to take it like your next destination – I’m sure you won’t regret. For any further questions that you might have, feel free to contact me!

Well yes! Kinda cute town. Although, I have now have a weird feeling if I go into a small town. Have been listening too much to a comedy podcast, called “small town murder”

A cute Austrian town surrounded by lakes and hills? Yes please! Klagenfurt city sounds amazing though I have never heard of it but I am not surprised because I am sure Austria has several such cute medieval towns which are scenic and gorgeous and as a traveller who hardly gets to spend more than a week in a country, it’s hard to come across such hidden gems. Lovely to know about it nevertheless 🙂

I would love to visit the Minimundus. Maybe it would be even more fun for grown-ups than kids? Since it would be especially cool to see the mini versions of the places you have visited in real life.

I should be going to Austria fairly soon. We have a friend to visit in Vienna. I will also have some time to kill. I might be able to give this town a visit. It’s not as famous as other towns in Austria, but it sure does look cute.

Klagenfurt looks exactly like my ‘imaginary perfect Austrian town’. You couldn’t place it anywhere else could you! How great that they have the minimundus too – it looks pretty good fun for grown-up kids as well!

Klagenfurt sure does sound like a nice mini town. I love a model village and this one looks like it’s one of the best I have seen so far. Austria is on my list so I may just add this onto a thing to do whilst there. How do you get to the town?
