Where is Rijeka?

Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia – after Zagreb and Split. It’s located in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea.

Historically, because of it’s strategic position and it’s excellent deep-water port, the city was fiercely contested, especially among Italy, Hungary and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries.

The river actually gives the name of the city., because Rijeka means “river” in Croatian and most of the old names of the city mean the same.

Where to eat in Rijeka?

Fish and seafood have a special place in Croatian cuisine when we’re talking about the cities on the Croatian cost. So, it’s not so strange that in Rijeka in every restaurant you can ear fish and seafood.

Of course, you can also find meat and vegetarian dishes, but it would be a shame not to try delicious Croatian fish while you’re there.

Or if you prefer you can sit and enjoy in nice tea 😉

Rijeka has the heart – Korzo

If you ask Croatians and the locals where to go to get know Rijeka – they will all send you to Korzo. It’s just the beating heart of that city.

At Korzo you can feel the true spirit of the city and the perfect is to sit for a cup of coffee. In Croatia we don’t prefer the Italian style of 5 minute espresso, we prefer to sit for at least one – two hours to enjoy properly.

Korzo is the most popular street and it’s full of people all the time.

Trsat

Another place that you can visit and it’s near is Trsat. Second one favourite for people in Rijeka and it’s somehow must see when you’re there.

Trsat is the near neighbourhood with his beautiful castle and recreation areas. It’s located on a hill above the city. The area for sure provides a beautiful panorama to the city of Rijeka.

Trsat castle dates back to prehistoric times when it was just a watchtower. It’s present appearance is from 19th century when it’s last owner Count Laval Nugent, bought it and turned it into a family mausoleum.

Trsat castle is open for visitors and you can freely enter and enjoy. If you a thirsty for a coffee, you can have one inside the castle or in one of the many others outside it’s walls.

There you can also find a statue to pope Ivan Pavao II.

Rijeka carnival

Rijeka is a home of one of the most famous carnivals in Croatia. It Is held on the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday.

The carnival includes a parade of masquerade groups and later a ritual of chasing the evil away from the city.

The evening finishes with an event at the harbour called the burning of the Pust. The Pust is a puppet given a satiric name that is blamed for all the bad things that happened in the city in the past year.

A spokesman reads all the sins of the Pust and then the puppet is taken to the sea on a boat. 1-2 days later, it’s burned on the boat. Similar events are held in many villages around and I would love to attend one of them.

Rijeka is perfect for one – two days to explore it properly. And it’s perfectly located if you want to to one day trips to cities that are near located, for example – Opatija.

About Opatija and what to do there, you’re able to read in my previous post.

Safe travels! 🙂
